Scholarship Kick-Off event February 25th 2012
On Saturday February 25th, 2012 we will host an incredible event to kick off the WST Seniors and Urban Youth at Risk Scholarship program. The evening’s festivities will include A Silent auction, a Live auction, a raffle drawing, Dinner, Dancing, Martial Arts Demonstrations and more!
The Raffles’ 3 prizes amount to over $10,000.00 in jewels with the Grand Prize being a 10- carat Aquamarine stone, surrounded by diamonds within a hand-made gold setting. (See Paul’s Blog to see prizes). Incredible artwork and antiques will be up for grabs at our live auction with other artwork and items which will be available during the silent auction.
The event hopes to raise enough money to provide one year scholarships for 10 under served local youth as well as 10 seniors who wish to learn Tai Chi to help with their health maintenance needs. We are accepting recommendations now for the scholarship winners so contact us if you know someone who would benefit from these services (send their name, address, phone number, email address and why they should receive the scholarship to localtriberp@aol.com).
The event will take place at the center behind the Bunker Hill Fire Station which is located at 3716 Rhode Island Avenue, Mt. Rainier MD 20712. There will be a nominal $5.00 entry fee to the event with light refreshments provided free of charge and more substantial food and drink for sale. There will also be a short hand dancing lesson provided prior to the dancing section of the evening. The hours of the event will be from 7-11pm and we plan to have a fun, informative, community based event for adults. Join us for the first great event of 2012. It’s going to be a blast!!
Call Paul Ramos at 301 270-0665 for more info or to donate items to either auction.
See you there!
PUSH HANDS WORK SHOP IN HAVERTOWN, PA- PT. 3
On January 7th 2012 Paul taught part three of his Overview of Push Hands Theory and Hands- On Intensive. This 5 hour workshop took place at the Sui Lum Pai School in Haverton, PA. and was attended by 10 eager participants. A review of single hand and double handed stationary push hands preceded exercises and strategies of moving push hands. Following that was an examination of push sword technique and practice. The last segment of the workshop concluded with Paul, his assistants, and all participants pushing together in a rotating 3 minute per round format. All comments were positive and part 4 of the series will take place in the Spring at a date TBA.
SPARRING CLASSES
Approximately every other Wednesday or Monday during the Xing –I (Hsing Yi)- Bagua Zhang (Ba Gua Chang) class, we will now focus on the basic handwork, legwork, falling/rolling and take down skills necessary to develop sparring and fighting technique. Class begins at 7:30pm and requires permission from the instructor for any students not currently enrolled during that class time.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Now that winter is upon us; it is a good time to review the policies that are in force at this time of year. First of all,-should Montgomery County schools be closed due to bad/ inclement weather- WST will also be closed. If it appears that the weather has significantly become better or there is any question feel free to call 301 270-0665 for any updates or to check in for Saturday class closings.
It is a good idea to bring dry, extra clothing to avoid going out while still wet into sub -freezing temperatures. If you are ill during the winter, please do not share your bad colds, viruses, and influenzas with your classmates. Stay home until you are no longer communicable and then return to class and EASE BACK into training. Hard training when not fully recovered tends to weaken you again and the illness may well return to produce more sick time way from work, school, or the job. Let’s all try to have a healthy and productive Winter training period.
WINTER PRIVATE LESSON SLOTS AVAILABLE
There are a limited number of available time slots for one –on- one instruction in a variety of areas. These include but are not limited to Tai Chi, Xing I, Bagua, Eastern or Western Sword Play, Push Hands, Meditation, Body Work, Self- Defense, or Qigong/ Energy Work.
